Why My Teeth are Turning Yellow?

Are you one of those people who is wondering, “Why my teeth are turning yellow?” Then, this post is for you.

Several factors affect your tooth color. You can control some of them; while others can’t.

Unfortunately, only a few individuals are blessed with having pearly white teeth. Most people are born to have teeth with a couple of shades darker. Having bright white teeth could look unnatural.

What truly determines the color of your teeth is the tooth enamel. Even if you brush and floss your teeth each day, your teeth will still be yellow because they’re your natural shade.

But here are common reasons your teeth are turning yellow.

As you age, your teeth start to yellow. It’s unfortunate but it’s part of the process as you grow old. The enamel on your teeth fades over time, whether you like it or not. One of its reasons is the lifetime of brushing. We don’t suggest you stop brushing your teeth. It’s just that wear and tear on your teeth is inevitable.

Tobacco products could damage your teeth. And they also stain them. That’s why smokers have yellowish teeth.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Plaque build-up could cause yellowish teeth. Thus, if you don’t brush and floss regularly, you should expect to have discolored teeth. For that reason, it is highly recommended that you clean your teeth every day. Brush them two to three times a day, followed by flossing. After that, you may rinse with fluoride mouthwash to strengthen your teeth and freshen your breath. You should also undergo professional teeth cleaning or prophylaxis to remove tartar.

When you were still eight years old, did you take doxycycline or tetracycline? If you did, then it could be the cause of your yellowish teeth. Other drugs might also cause your teeth to turn yellow. Talk to your physician about changing your medicines because the ones you’re using are causing teeth discoloration.

Medical Condition or Treatment

Some diseases and their treatments could cause tooth discoloration. But they are rare. If you’re undergoing chemotherapy for your cancer, then your teeth will have a brownish color.

Are off-white teeth unhealthy?

Thankfully, they are not. However, yellow plaque deposits aren’t healthy at all. Then again, it is also possible to have a perfect set of teeth that has a shade of yellow. But don’t worry. There are teeth whitening procedures that you can undergo to whiten your teeth.

However, some procedures work by penetrating your enamel. As a result, they weaken your teeth if you undergo them numerous times. In most cases, yellow teeth are a lot stronger than those brighter white ones.

But for aesthetic reason, you would surely wish to have your teeth whitened. If you wish to make your teeth whiter than they currently are, you must seek advisement from your dentist. He/she may recommend the best procedure that works for your condition. Don’t just use a teeth whitening product that you can purchase from a pharmacy. You might be wasting your money and time. Worse, you’re only damaging your teeth. Talk to your dentist first.
