What Could Be Causing My Gums to Bleed?

Bleeding gums can be alarming. However, they are to be expected if you are not practicing proper dental hygiene.

What Are the Causes of Bleeding Gums?

1. Incorrect Brushing Technique

This is the most common cause of bleeding gums. Most people brush their teeth vigorously, as they think that this will keep their teeth clean.

However, your gums are made of sensitive tissue. Brushing forcefully can damage them, causing them to bleed.

For that reason, it is important that you use only soft nylon bristles. It does not matter whether you choose a manual or electric toothbrush.

The bristles must be soft so that your sensitive gums do not bleed. Medium and hard bristles will damage the teeth enamel and cause gums to swell.

When brushing, use circular motions. Doing so will massage the teeth and gums. Do not use a back-and-forth motion, which will damage your gums and cause swelling.

2. Gingivitis

Another common reason is gum disease. This is typically the result of improper hygiene. Even if you brush and floss your teeth every day, if you are not doing it properly, you are still practicing improper dental hygiene.

The reason for this is that improper brushing and flossing can still result in plaque buildup, especially along the gum line.

If this is not treated properly, you could suffer from gingivitis. This is a severe form of gum disease that causes swelling and bleeding when you brush.

If you notice that your gums bleed every time you brush, consult your dentist immediately. He can tell you whether you are brushing or cleaning your teeth properly. Visiting your dentist regularly will also prevent gum disease from worsening.

3. Medicines

If you have a medical condition, you may be taking some prescription medicines that cause bleeding gums.

Some drugs can affect your body’s ability to form a clot. Hence, you are prone to bleeding easily.

Do not stop taking your medicines without first talking to your prescribing physician. If your medicines are causing your gums to bleed, your doctor may prescribe something else.

Your dentist and your physician must work hand in hand to boost your oral health while you are being treated for your medical condition.

Do Not Stop Brushing or Flossing

Never stop brushing or flossing if you notice that your gums are bleeding. Instead, consult your dentist about it.

Your dental health professional will examine your case and determine the cause of your bleeding gums.

It can be difficult to floss and brush properly because of your swollen gums. However, brushing and flossing are still vital to avoid worsening your gum condition. Your dentist may give you some medicines to take to stop bleeding gums.

Your gums can bleed at any time. However, you can make your gums healthier by practicing proper oral hygiene. Talk to your dentist about how you can stop your gums from bleeding. Schedule a consultation today by calling Manhattan Beach Dental Center.
