What Are Some Common Mistakes For Brushing Your Teeth?

Having poor dental hygiene can destroy your teeth. Unfortunately, the majority of individuals in the US don’t care for their teeth. To keep your pearly whites in tip-top shape, you must visit your dentist regularly.

But good oral hygiene begins at home. Along with flossing, brushing the right way is vital to keep a healthy set of teeth and gums.

Even though you brush your teeth regularly, you may experience tooth decay. It’s possible if you’re committing these mistakes when brushing your teeth.

1. You’re not brushing for two minutes.

The brushing time of most individuals is only 45 seconds. But the recommended duration is actually two minutes. The long period is vital to ensure that the fluoride in the toothpaste has enough time to get into the enamel.

If you switch to an electric toothbrush, you can reach two minutes of brushing because this type of brush has a timer in it. When you start using it, you’ll be surprised at the result of brushing your teeth for two minutes.

If you cut short when you brush your teeth, you miss a lot of areas in your teeth that require cleaning. Parts of them get neglected to make them a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

Although electric toothbrush with timers is quite expensive than a regular toothbrush, it’s worth the cost. However, if you can’t afford to purchase one yet, you may use a stopwatch to help you time yourself when brushing and reach the two minutes goal.

2. You’re using the wrong brush.

Never use a hard bristled brush, unless your dentist requires it. Too stiff bristles can only hurt your gums causing pain when you brush your teeth.

Find a brush that comes with soft or extra soft bristles. You don’t need hard bristles because you’re not buffing your teeth. You only need to remove those food particles stuck in between your teeth.

The use of medium to hard bristles can also cause the removal of enamel from your teeth. As a result, you’ll experience teeth sensitivity. In this condition, your teeth and gums hurt when you drink hot or cold beverages.

3. Your brushing technique is incorrect.

Never go back and forth. Instead, go with circular motions because they’re gentler and more effective in cleaning those gaps between your teeth.

When you’re doing the circular motion, don’t press the brush too hard. Instead, use a lighter touch. Never brush so hard that it causes the bristles to bend on your teeth.

4. You’re not brushing regularly.

The rule of thumb is to brush after every meal. However, not all people can do that. If you can’t brush thrice a day, make sure that you clean your teeth after breakfast and before going to bed.

It’s also important to wait for 30 minutes before brushing. This is particularly the case if you just had an acidic meal. Brushing your teeth right away after eating acidic food can penetrate your tooth enamel causing damage to it.

It can take a while before you correct these mistakes when brushing your teeth. However, if you change one habit per week, you’ll notice that your mouth feels cleaner and fresher.
