My Tooth Broke Off at the Gum Line

A broken tooth should never be ignored. Even if your tooth has broken off at the gum line, you may have sharp edges that may change the effectiveness of your bite or even cut your tongue. Many of our patients have called and said “My Tooth Broke Off at the Gum Line”. If you leave a broken tooth untreated, it may break further, causing damage below the gum line and irritating the surrounding teeth.

As soon as you realize that the tooth as broken, it is important that you contact our office  to have the tooth evaluated and treated. A break like this is usually caused by tooth decay, Use warm water to gently rinse your mouth, and if your tooth is bleeding use some gauze or a wet tea bag to apply gentle pressure in order to stop the bleeding. If necessary, an over-the-counter pain medication or ice pack can help alleviate any pain that you may be experiencing.

If you’re unable to make it in to our Office Immediately For an Appointment, you can buy a temporary tooth repair kit at your local drugstore. These over-the-counter kits are meant to be a temporary solution, and should never be used as a replacement for professional dental care. If you choose to leave the tooth untreated, you risk an infection that can spread from the tooth into the gums, bone, and your other teeth.

Teeth may be made from some of the strongest material produced by the human body, but they are not indestructible. Occasionally breaks do happen, whether from tooth decay or injury. Even if the break is small, or you are not experiencing any pain from the broken tooth, it is important that you still seek professional care. Failure to do so can cause further damage to your dental and overall health.

There’s a open reception area that allows me meet, greet and answer any questions that our clients may have. We have a great play area for kids and many of our adult patients have a great time in our waiting room. On any given day, a spontaneous “party” can happen in the front area while serious dentistry is getting performed. We take pride in getting to know our patients and making them feel comfortable, like family, and not just an anonymous face off the street. This is what sets us apart from any other practice in the area.
