My Tooth Broke and Hurts

Our teeth are strong but they’re not strong enough to prevent from chipping, breaking or cracking. When a patient calls us and says “My tooth broke and hurts,” we’d ask him/her to visit our clinic as soon as possible.

Breaking your tooth can happen in several ways. Biting down on a hard food or being hit in the mouth could cause your tooth to break and might cause pain. When your tooth breaks, it usually doesn’t cause any pain. This is especially true if you’ve sustained a minor tooth fracture. However, if it involves a larger piece of tooth, it could really hurt as the nerve inside it could be damaged. You’d also experience extreme discomfort when your nerve endings are exposed to air or hot/cold drinks/foods.

Since there’s nothing that you could do at home to your broken tooth, you should call your dentist immediately. If you could not visit your dentist ASAP, there are ways to relieve the pain from a broken tooth.

The first thing that you must do is to rinse your mouth with a glass of warm water. Then, get a clean gauze and use it to apply pressure to the bleeding area. Do it for 10 minutes or until there’s no more bleeding.

To reduce swelling, we recommend applying a cold pack.

You should also avoid eating cold/hot foods or drinking hot/cold beverages. The dentin layer of the affected tooth is likely exposed. If you eat or consume hot/cold foods, they may cause pain as a result of extremes in temperature.

It’s also a no-no to eat or drink sugary or acidic food/beverage. Then, if the pain is unbearable, you may take an OTC pain relief medicine. Make sure to take a medicine that can reduce inflammation as the pain is most likely the result of inflammation of the tissue or nerve.

Your friend may recommend putting a pain relief medicine on the affected tooth. But this isn’t a wise decision as such medicine could burn the tissue.

You may use oil of cloves that you can find in health food stores. It has antiseptic and aesthetic properties that can effectively reduce pain. Then, seal the crack by using an OTC temporary filling material.

The pain may also be relieved by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water solution three times a day. Salt water is ideal for removing bacteria from an infected area.

Although the pain as a result of a broken tooth may come and gone, you should not wait too long to see your dentist. The longer you have to wait for the issue to be resolved, the more serious complications might arise. As soon as you experience a broken tooth, whether it hurts or not, you should immediately see your dentist or book an appointment with him/her.

At your dentist’s clinic, your condition will be assessed first as each type of tooth feature requires different treatment.

There’s a open reception area that allows me meet, greet and answer any questions that our clients may have. We have a great play area for kids and many of our adult patients have a great time in our waiting room. On any given day, a spontaneous “party” can happen in the front area while serious dentistry is getting performed. We take pride in getting to know our patients and making them feel comfortable, like family, and not just an anonymous face off the street. This is what sets us apart from any other practice in the area.
