How Long Do Dental Fillings Last for?

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last for? It’s a common question that we get from our patients. Dental fillings lifespan will depend on their size, location, and most importantly how you take care of them. If the filling is small, you can expect it to last for 20 years. It stays in your tooth without causing any problem.

However, when the size gets larger, the area being covered gets wider. This means that more work is to be done and more fillings to be placed on that tooth. It will eventually result in decreasing the filling’s longevity.

Will make a decision whether or not to place a dental crown or a cap to the affected tooth. This is to maximize the dental fillings’ lifespan.

The only factor that dentist can’t control is how patients take care of their dental fillings. No matter how beautiful the restoration is if you don’t take care of it, it won’t still last for long. Thus, three to six months after the restoration, your dentist will recommend another filling as decay is seen.

Dental fillings are like your car. To make sure that your car can last for decades, its manufacturer recommends changing its oil on a regular basis. In this way, you won’t experience a problem with your car. This is also the same with your dental fillings. You need to take care of them. You have to monitor them regularly so they will last for a long time.

How to Take Care of Your Dental Fillings

To make your fillings last longer, you should brush your teeth properly, as least twice a day.

Don’t forget to floss after brushing.

It’s normal to experience tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperature. With that in mind, avoid things that can trigger sensitivity, such as chewing gums, ice-cold beverages, etc.

To alleviate tooth sensitivity, you may use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.

On the other hand, if the sensitivity causes sharp pain in the restored teeth, you should inform your dentist right away. Sometimes, this sharp pain is the result of gold and silver fillings that are placed too close to each other.

You should also avoid grinding your teeth. This habit can only crack your filling and may require replacements.

Can You Eat Immediately After the Dental Filling Procedure?

This will depend on the type of filing being used. For grey fillings or amalgam, it can take time for it to harden. To harden completely, it takes 24 hours.

However, you don’t have to wait a day before you can eat. We, at Manhattan Beach Dental Center, recommend waiting for one hour after the procedure before you eat anything. The food that you should eat must be soft. Then, after 24 hours, you can start eating solid foods, again.

White fillings, on the other hand, harden immediately when they are exposed to the blue light. This means that you can eat and drink after the procedure.
