How Important Oral Health Is For A Mother-To-Be

Though plaque is harmful for everyone, it increases the risks of having gum diseases in a pregnant woman

So you have bought some clothes, toys and an opulent crib for your upcoming baby? Way to go! But in this excitement did you not forget one thing?

The experience of giving birth to a new life is second to none and this is why the parents-to-be, especially mothers get overwhelmed and start shopping for the baby even when she/he is not born yet. Needless to say that there is a huge impact of a mother’s health on her baby’s. Therefore, you should be concerned about your health. When visiting your gynecologist, book an appointment with a dentist as well.

The reason why I am emphasizing oral care is that studies have proven that during pregnancy when the hormonal activity is already high, a woman becomes more prone to getting gum diseases. If still I was unable to convince you to visit a dentist, my next line would certainly compel you to do so.

Gum diseases in a pregnant woman are linked with premature labor and could also invite other labor complications. Here is a check-list to ensure oral hygiene:

  • Brush regularly.
  • Flossing is also necessary.
  • Consult with a dentist to assure everything is going smoothly. The ideal time to have this meeting is in your second trimester. This is the time when your pregnancy stabilizes; however, you can still not neglect the odds of stress-induced complications.

What should a dental checkup entail?

In the olden days, women were not in favor of seeing a dentist during their pregnancy because they considered it unsafe. The times have changed now. Today when you visit a dental facility they clean up your gums and teeth meticulously to ensure particles that were left during regular brushing and flossing have been removed.

Some Handy Tips

  1. If you are suffering from morning sickness, brushing your teeth right after you wake up could be a bad idea because it is the time when your teeth are softer due to acidic secretions in the stomach. Just rinse your mouth and wait for sometime till the feeling is gone before brushing.
  2. If your dentist suggests you some procedure, it is advised that you tell him right away that you are pregnant and discuss it with your OBGYN also to make sure the procedure does not create any future problems for the baby and you too.

A brief dental checkup can save you and your child from a number of problems, why procrastinate then?
