How Can I Whiten My Teeth?

Tooth whitening is one of the most highly requested cosmetic dentistry treatments offered in our office today. While you can find many over-the-counter whitening treatments, toothpastes, and mouthwashes in most local drugstores, none of these can provide you with the same results you would receive from professional whitening treatment. In fact, some of these treatments may damage your teeth. If you say “How can I whiten My Teeth?’, keep reading and find out how.

Can at-home whitening damage your teeth?

When used incorrectly, at-home whitening products can cause damage to your tooth enamel and irritate your gums and lips. If you overuse these products, you may even develop a somewhat blueish tint to your teeth or have uneven coloration. If you do choose to use an over-the-counter whitening solution, it is important that you do so under the direction of your dentist. Of course, you could avoid any unpleasant side effects by choosing one of the many take-home professional whitening kits that we have available in our office.

Regardless of which whitening method you choose, following these tips can give you better results:

  • Have your teeth professionally cleaned before beginning whitening treatments
  • Brush and floss your teeth before applying the at-home whitening strips or solution
  • Choose formulas that have a lower percentage of peroxide, allowing you to whiten overnight
  • Do not eat or drink for at least two hours after using your teeth whitening product.

At-Home Whitening and Dental Work

If you currently have any dental work such as dental veneers, dental crowns, dental bridges or any dental bonding, you need to skip using over-the-counter whitening methods. Dental work is far more easily damaged by whitening products, and can result in unattractive discoloration known as “Technicolor teeth”. Instead, consult your dentist to receive a list of options that will be best for you.

Whitening Toothpastes and Floss

Every toothpaste helps to whiten your teeth to some degree, however special whitening toothpastes contain chemical bleaching agents or peroxide. Unfortunately, many of these toothpastes also contain abrasives such as calcium carbonate, aluminum oxide, or silica, which can cause serious damage to the tooth enamel. These can also damage the surface of your dental restorations as well.

Unlike whitening toothpastes, whitening dental floss is one over-the-counter product you shouldn’t dismiss or ignore. Whitening floss can help to remove stains between the teeth and below the gums, where other pastes and solutions can’t reach. However, because it will contain abrasives, it may still damage your existing dental work. Your best choice for whitening remains a professional take-home kit from our office.
