My Gums Bleed Every Morning

Many patients feel that it is normal if their gums bleed every morning when they brush their teeth. While vigorous brushing can irritate the gums, and improper brushing technique may damage the gum tissue, bleeding gums are never normal. In most cases, this is a symptom of a much larger problem that should be evaluated and treated as soon as possible.

What causes the gums to bleed?

If your gums bleed every morning, this may be an indication that you are using poor brushing technique, or a toothbrush whose bristles are too hard. When you brush, you should use a circular motion, gently massaging the plaque and food debris from the teeth. It is never appropriate to try to “scrub” the teeth clean – this can not only damage your gum tissue, it can harm your teeth as well.

If your gums are bleeding and inflamed even without brushing, this is an indication that you have gingivitis or periodontal disease. When plaque builds up on the teeth and along the gum line, the tissue can become swollen and inflamed. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontal disease, known as periodontitis. In periodontitis, the gum disease has progressed to the point that an infection has formed beneath the gums. This causes them to become swollen and red, and the gums may bleed.

There are a few other, rarer causes of bleeding gums. These underlying medical conditions include:

  • Thyroid disease
  • Diabetes
  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Leukemia

If your gums are bleeding, it is important that you visit our office right away so your condition can be evaluated and the cause determined.

How are bleeding gums treated?

The treatment you receive for your bleeding gums will vary based on the cause. If your gums are bleeding due to improper brushing technique, changing to the proper method and correct toothbrush will usually solve the problem. In the case of gingivitis, your dentist will need to perform a deep cleaning in order to remove the plaque and tartar that have built up on the teeth and along the gum line. In some cases, you may also be prescribed antibiotics and other medications to help the gums heal and to prevent any infection from occurring.

If your gum disease has progressed into periodontitis, a deep cleaning and prescription medications may not be enough. In these cases you will require periodontal surgery in order to remove the plaque and tartar from beneath the gums, as well as to treat the infection and shrink the deep periodontal pockets that have formed beneath the gum line. In some more severe cases, bone and tissue grafts may also be necessary.

If the dentist determines that your bleeding gums are not caused by any of the above causes, you will be referred to your general practitioner or specialist in order to determine the correct course of treatment.
