Can Mouth wash Burn Your Mouth?

Some mouthwashes can cause burning sensation in your mouth. A lot of people blame the alcohol component. However, the burning sensation is the result of the essential oils in the solution similar to the burning sensation when you have cinnamon.

At Manhattan Beach Dental Center, we don’t recommend the use of alcohol-based mouthwash. That’s because alcohol can quickly dry out your mouth, enhancing the burning sensation that you feel. The role of the alcohol in the solution is not to fight plaque, but to help the other ingredients dissolve in the solution.

Essential oils in the mouthwash

It’s not the alcohol that’s causing the burning sensation, but the essential oils. These essential oils are the active ingredients of the mouthwash, and their role is to remove bacteria in your mouth. The tingling sensation is actually helping you have a cleaner mouth and fresher breath.

There are several types of mouthwash on the market. If the burning is preventing you from using mouthwash, then it might be time for you to use another brand of solution. You should try mouthwash that has a physiologic pH, which is uncommon with most mouthwash. It also contains few essential oils so it won’t give you burning sensation.

What is the best mouthwash solution?

Try to use mouthwash without alcohol because alcohol can be too harsh to your mouth and can dry out your mouth. If you use mouthwash with alcohol regularly, the alcohol could damage your mouth and over time, can causes oral sores.

Because alcohol-based mouthwash dries your mouth, you may suffer from bad breath. When your mouth is dry, it lowers saliva production. Remember that saliva is vital in fighting against halitosis as it kills anaerobic bacteria in your mouth. It’s ideal to choose mouthwash without alcohol.

If you wish to dilute a commercial mouthwash, you should mix it with warm water. Compared with cold water, warm water works better in cleaning your mouth. It’s the same as washing your dishes. The best way to clean your dishes is to use hot water to clean them effectively.

Can mouthwash cause oral cancer?

Some reports linked mouthwash with oral cancer. However, there’s no conclusive evidence yet as to whether or not mouthwash can cause oral cancer.

If you want to use mouthwash but you’re wondering what brand you choose, you should talk to your dentist. At Manhattan Beach Dental Center, we only recommend mouthwash based on our patients’ dental condition. It’s ideal to talk to your doctor and find out if you can benefit from it.
