Do Dental Fillings Hurt Afterward?

Dental Fillings Manhattan Beach CASome dental fillings hurt afterward and may cause pain. This situation is common. But it is irritating. When your tooth hurts after it has been restored, you should consider going back to your dentist. In this way, your doctor will diagnose the cause of it.

Most teeth that need fillings do not hurt. They may cause pain if the cavity affects the nerve. When that happens, pain can easily set in. To get rid of the dental pain, an extraction or root canal procedure may be necessary.

If there is a cavity in your tooth, your dentist may recommend a dental filling. It replaces the decayed area of your tooth structure. In other words, dental filling helps in giving the tooth strength once again. But this procedure requires preparation.

Your dentist will remove the decayed area before applying dental filling. After the decay has been completely removed, the dental filling will be placed. The filling blends naturally with the tooth structuring after the material hardens.

As for the pain, some patients may experience pain after dental filling placement. Several reasons could cause it. One of them is your bite being off. When your tooth and gum are numb, you cannot bite down properly as you would normally do.

It can take several days before you get used to having your new bite. However, if you can’t bite down right or if you are experiencing toothache a few days after the new filling has been placed, your dentist may help you adjust your bite to correct the pain.

Acute inflammation

It is another reason your dental fillings hurt after placement. The inflammation arises when the nerve in the tooth becomes inflamed because of the dental work. It is normal and it is part of the healing process after any dental work.

If you have a deep cavity, you can expect more inflammation. You will also experience more sensitivity after a new filling has been placed.

The dental pain can last for a few days or even weeks. But with time, most teeth could recover. However, if your condition did not get better with time, it could be an indication of a chronic inflammation. In this situation, your dentist may recommend another dental treatment. Most of the time, it requires a root canal.

To protect your treated tooth against dental pain, you must practice best oral hygiene at home. It includes brushing your teeth twice a day. Then, make sure that you floss.

Easing the pain

One of the ways to ease the pain is to rinse your mouth with warm water. If your gums are swollen, place a cold compress. But apply it on the outside of your mouth. You may also use a pain reliever to ease the pain while waiting for your dental appointment.

You may have heard of a remedy that requires placing an aspirin against the gums on the aching tooth. But it is not a proven remedy. In fact, it can cause burning. It may also damage your gum tissue.

If the pain persists, you should visit your dentist as soon as possible. Contact Manhattan Beach Dental Center today to schedule an appointment with one of our dentists.
